Driving Test Booking Changes from Spring 2026 – What Learners Need to Know
From spring 2026, important changes are coming to the way car driving tests are booked and managed in England, Scotland and Wales. The new rules are introduced by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and will affect every learner planning a practical driving test.
If you are learning to drive now or planning your test for 2026, this update is essential.

Booking Your Driving Test in 2026
From later in spring 2026, you must book your practical driving test yourself via GOV.UK. Driving instructors will no longer be able to book or manage test appointments on your behalf.
You should only book a test at a centre you genuinely plan to use, as moving to distant centres will no longer be allowed. Always speak to your instructor before booking and only choose a date when you are realistically test-ready. When booking, use your instructor’s personal reference number so the system can check availability and avoid clashes.
Choosing the right date is crucial, as you will only be allowed two changes to your booking.

Making Changes to Your Driving Test
From 31 March 2026, you will be allowed a maximum of two changes per booking.
Each of the following actions counts as one change:
– changing the date
– changing the time
– changing the test centre
– swapping your test with another learner who already has a booking
Once both changes are used, you must cancel your test and book a new one.
If you cancel at least 10 full working days before your test date, you will receive a full refund.

How Driving Instructors Manage Availability
Driving instructors can still manage their availability using the DVSA online system. They can set daily availability, block out holidays or unavailable dates, and define minimum gaps between tests.
When you enter your instructor’s reference number during booking, the system automatically checks availability. However, the responsibility for booking and managing the test remains with the learner.

Why These Changes Matter
The new rules are designed to reduce booking abuse, limit unnecessary rescheduling, and encourage proper preparation instead of repeated changes.
For learners, this means better planning, fewer last-minute decisions, and a higher chance of passing the driving test first time.
