Swapping Your Driving Test with Another Learner Driver – Step-by-Step Guide
Waiting months for a practical driving test can feel frustrating, especially when you are ready to pass and start driving independently. Since May 2026, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has introduced official rules that allow learner drivers to swap driving test appointments with each other legally.
As a driving instructor at Drive Croydon, I often speak with learners who want an earlier test date or need to move their appointment to a more suitable time. In this guide, I explain exactly how driving test swaps work, who can swap, and what you need to prepare before contacting DVSA.
What Is a Driving Test Swap?
A driving test swap means that two learner drivers exchange their existing driving test appointments with each other.
This is different from changing or cancelling your test through the DVSA booking system. You are not finding a new date or time. Instead, both learners agree to exchange:
- the driving test date,
- the time,
- and the test centre.
For example, if your test is booked in July and another learner has a June appointment, you can legally swap those bookings if both of you agree and meet the DVSA rules.
Who Can Swap a Driving Test?
From 12 May 2026, only learner drivers themselves can arrange a swap.
This means:
- you can only swap your own practical driving test,
- both learners must agree to the exchange,
- and the swap must be completed directly through DVSA.
Driving instructors, third-party websites, friends or family members are not allowed to swap tests on someone else’s behalf.
As an instructor, I can advise you whether you are test-ready, but I cannot legally arrange the swap for you.
Rules You Must Meet Before Swapping
DVSA only allows a driving test swap if both learners meet specific conditions.
1. Both Learners Must Still Have Changes Available
Each learner driver is allowed to make up to 2 changes to a driving test booking.
A swap counts as one change. If either learner has already used both allowed changes, the swap cannot happen.
2. The Swap Must Be Requested Early Enough
You must request the swap at least 10 full working days before the earlier of the two test dates.
DVSA counts Monday to Saturday as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not count.
3. The Test Centres Must Qualify
Before 9 June 2026, learners can swap tests between any driving test centres.
From 9 June 2026, stricter location rules apply. You can only swap with someone whose test is booked at:
- the same driving test centre,
- one of the 3 nearest test centres,
- or the test centre you originally booked.
This rule must work for both learners.
Important for Drive Croydon learners: many of my students are closest to West Wickham Driving Test Centre and Mitcham Driving Test Centre. If you are planning a swap, always check that the DVSA location rules allow the exchange between your chosen test centres.
4. The Test Types Must Match
DVSA only allows swaps between identical test types.
Examples include:
- weekday practical tests with other weekday tests,
- evening or weekend tests with the same type,
- extended tests with other extended tests,
- extra-time tests with other extra-time tests.
If the booking types are different, DVSA will not complete the exchange.
Check with Your Driving Instructor First
Before agreeing to a swap, always speak to your instructor.
I recommend checking:
- whether you are genuinely ready for the new test date,
- whether your instructor is available,
- and whether they can travel to the new test centre.
Many learners focus only on getting an earlier appointment, but being fully prepared for the practical test is far more important than simply taking it sooner.
How to Swap a Driving Test
Currently, driving test swaps can only be completed by telephone through DVSA customer services.
You cannot swap a test:
- online,
- by email,
- through WhatsApp,
- through social media,
- or via webchat.
Both learner drivers must be available at the same time because DVSA will speak to each person separately during the process.
What You Need Before Calling DVSA
Before calling, prepare the following:
- your driving licence number,
- your driving test booking reference,
- details of previous driving tests,
- and the payment card details used for the booking, if applicable.
You will also need the other learner driver’s booking reference number.
For security reasons, never share sensitive information such as:
- your address,
- your theory test certificate number,
- your payment card security code,
- or your full bank card number.
Update Your Contact Details Before the Swap
DVSA uses the phone number and email address attached to your booking to verify your identity.
Before calling, check that your details are correct in the DVSA booking system.
Updating contact details does not count as one of your allowed booking changes.
What Happens During the DVSA Call?
The process usually works like this:
- One learner calls DVSA.
- DVSA completes identity and security checks.
- The caller confirms they agree to the swap.
- DVSA contacts the second learner using the phone number on their booking.
- The second learner completes security checks and confirms the exchange.
- DVSA finalises the swap.
If either learner fails security checks, refuses the declaration, cannot answer the phone or is not eligible, the swap will not happen and both original bookings remain unchanged.
DVSA Contact Details
You can contact DVSA customer services on:
Telephone: 0300 200 1122
Select option 1 and follow the instructions.
Opening hours:
Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm
What Happens After the Swap?
Once the exchange is complete:
- you receive the other learner’s test slot,
- they receive yours,
- and both bookings are updated immediately.
You keep your original booking reference, your payment details and any special requirements attached to your booking.
DVSA does not send an instant confirmation email after the swap. However, future reminder emails will show your updated test details.
My Advice as a Driving Instructor
As an instructor working with learner drivers in Croydon and surrounding areas, I always remind students that an earlier test is only helpful if you are genuinely prepared.
Before swapping your practical test appointment, ask yourself:
- Can I drive independently and safely?
- Am I consistently passing mock tests?
- Am I comfortable driving in unfamiliar areas?
- Can I handle pressure during the practical test?
A well-prepared learner has a much higher chance of passing first time than someone rushing into an earlier appointment.
